TOEFL is an important step towards achieving success in academics and many other
fields in future. Not only will you secure admissions in good universities but many
recruitment agencies and companies also check TOEFL scores. Hence preparing well
for TOEFL is of utmost importance. All you need to do is achieve proficiency in
English which will come with practice. This will help you in achieving a good score
in TOEFL followed by success in academics in the university.
The Structure and written expression is one of the sections of TOEFL. Here you are
supposed to answer around 40 questions in 25 minutes. These questions are divided
into 2 parts. The first part i.e. structure consists of 15 Sentence completion questions
wherein you fill the blanks in a sentence. These are multiple choice questions.
Hence each sentence in the Structure and written expression has 4 choices out of
which you pick the one that is grammatically correct and makes sense when inserted
in the sentence.
The second part of Structure and written expression is the written expression which
comprises of 25 questions which are similar to multiple choice questions. This part
is also known as Error Recognition since there are sentences with four words or
group of words underlined out of which you need to recognise the wrong or incorrect
word or group of words. This requires a proper understanding of the sentence to
check which option does not fit correctly.
This part of Structure and written expression can be quite challenging as the sentence
may seem to make sense when you read it first but has an error. Also the time allotted
is very less. So a good speed is mandatory too. If the first part is completed quickly,
you may save some time for the second part. All this will appear easy if you practice
reading, writing and listening well and with the help of TOEFL vocabulary and sample
tests.
