The TOEFL Speaking section has 6 questions which include 2 independent speaking
and 4 integrated speaking assignments. The time allotted to answer an independent
speaking question is 45 seconds for each question while for integrated one is 60
seconds per question. Since the entire communication process is based on speaking
and listening and it is very important to master this art. You may not have the
best of language skills, but a little effort in constantly speaking in English and
reading books regularly might be of great help.
Following are a few speaking tips that will come handy while answering the TOEFL
test:
- The moment you decide to appear for TOEFL, start conversing in English with everyone.
- The second most important of the speaking tips is to start thinking in English.
Only when your thoughts are of the same language that you speak, you will be able
to express yourself with correct language. Else it will be just a mere translation.
- Pick up passages and read them aloud. This will not only give you confidence but
also add to your fluency in English.
- Speak in a clear and crisp tone so that everyone can hear you clearly.
- The integrated section involves speaking along with many other speakers. One of
the important speaking tips is to be clear about your thoughts and keep speaking
without getting distracted.
- Use idioms or difficult words from the vocabulary only if required. You do not have
a chance to correct yourself. Hence whatever you speak even though in simple words,
be confident.
- One of the necessary speaking tips is to use proper tone and punctuations. Do not
speak to fast.
- When you see the time running out, start concluding the answer immediately. This
will help in completing the answer without exaggerating any thought.
