As the TOEFL evaluates you on your knowledge of English, it is important to test
your abilities in social circumstances too. Thus 2 major sections of the test consist
of integrated tasks. There are integrated speaking and writing tasks in the TOEFL
Speaking and Writing section. You are expected to refer to different sources and
involve multiple opinions in these tasks. The integrated speaking and writing section
is allocated a fixed amount of time and hence you need to be swift in completing
these sections.
While the entire writing section is allocated 50 minutes in an internet based test,
you are required to handle one independent and one integrated task in it. Since
the independent tasks need your personal opinions and views, they can be completed
faster so that you can allocate more time to the integrated speaking and writing
tasks. The speaking task is allocated only 20 minutes where students must complete
2 independent and 4 integrated tasks. This section will require deep concentration
and a quick thought process so that you are not distracted when others speak during
the integrated tasks. Your views and opinions should be clear.
Since the integrated speaking and writing part covers more than 50% of the respective
sections. It is important to complete this successfully. These parts include different
sources of contents, quotes, statements which you need to comprehend and report
properly. In the speaking section, your voice needs to be crisp and clear and pronunciations
need to be apt. The writing section requires good vocabulary, continuous and synthesized
flow of thoughts.
In the integrated speaking and writing sections, you are expected to provide solutions
in case of arguments or debates while in case of general passages or lectures you
are supposed to explain the link between different episodes and their relation.
You are not allowed to confer your personal opinions in the integrated speaking
and writing parts.
