TOEFL Grammar is of university level and hence grave mistakes in pronunciations,
clauses, tenses, punctuations are not acceptable. The base of English language is
knowledge of grammar. If your sentences or language is not grammatically correct,
you cannot master the language. Use of correct grammar obviously comes with practice.
There are various basic level English Grammar books that non-native English speaking
students can refer to. The preparation for this should begin at least a couple of
months in advance because unless and until your base is strong, you cannot develop
your language skills.
Listening to a lot of English CDs, news, watching English shows and movies can help
a great deal. Also one has to understand various parts of the speech, difference
between verb and adverb, adjectives, pronouns, tenses, subjective and objective
parts, conjunctions etc. The TOEFL Grammar also includes Gerunds, Infinitives, clauses,
articles, singular, plural, prepositions, word orders, word form, punctuations etc.
One more important part of TOEFL grammar is sentence formation and sentence structure.
This will help you comprehend passages more easily. It will also improve your essay
writing skills thus improving your TOEFL score. The TOEFL test contains many sentence
completion questions which require to be completed with grammatically correct words.
The essay writing section also needs a proper flow of thought and correct language.
If your tenses or clauses and verbs are not in place you will end up losing marks.
Similar is the case with listening and speaking sections where pronunciations and
speaking in correct grammar is very important.
There are 3 E’s to remember in order to master the TOEFL grammar. First is explanation
wherein you understand the words and grammar and its use, second is the example
where you learn how to draft those words and conjunctions in sentences and last
is exercise where you practice to master the art. If these are kept in mind and
practiced religiously you will surely succeed in your TOEFL exam.
