Writing an essay is always a tough task. Moreover if you are expected to write in any other language than your first language, it becomes all the more difficult. Hence the TOEFL essay section is considered as the most difficult section of all. The essay if written properly can improve your score drastically and if not up to the mark then it can drop your score too. It is important to impress the evaluator with your TOEFL essay. Following are a few tips on writing a TOEFL essay to score well:

  • Read lot of English material, sample essays, novels etc to improve your vocabulary and understand how to structure sentences and create a good thought flow.
  • Relax your mind completely before writing the essay.
  • Understand the topic and start building up ideas on the key points.
  • Give an introduction, body (opinions, examples) and conclusion to your essay. There should be advantages, disadvantages, facts, traditions that can be mentioned in the body.
  • The essay should be approximately 5 paragraphs or more.
  • Use simple language and small sentences as they reflect a good style. You may use a few lengthy sentences a couple of times for giving your TOEFL essay a different structure.
  • Use statements, quotes, experiences and dramatic sentences if required to add innovation.
  • Make sure all sentences are grammatically correct and each paragraph is a continuation to the previous thought. The tense used in the beginning should continue till the end and do not begin a new paragraph or sentence with a conjunction.
  • Stick to a single thought to attract the attention of the reader. A combination of different thoughts in a same essay will lead to confusion in the mind of the evaluator.
  • The conclusion may include a lines summarizing the entire essay and then concluding it by giving your opinion or a general statement for a lasting effect.
