The TOEFL is a test that is primarily meant for non-native English speakers and
which ultimately aims to make out whether the candidate’s ability to use and understand
English as a language matches the expectations imposed on native English speaking
students in at the college and university levels. The TOEFL CBT stands for Computer
Based Test format and is one of the three formats used by candidates giving the
TOEFL. The TOEFL CBT format is more or less obsolete now-a-days as people generally
prefer the IBT or the Internet Based Test format over the CBT and if the region
in which they are attempting the TOEFL does not facilitate the IBT format, the PBT
(Paper Based Test) format is generally preferred.
The TOEFL CBT consists of four sections that relate to a different skill set concerned
with the English language, these sections are labelled as – The Listening comprehension
section which tests the candidate’s ability to understand the way English is spoken
by those whose mother tongue happens to be English; the Structure and written English
section which tests the ability to recognize expected standards and the ability
to put down English within such standards; the Vocabulary and reading comprehension
section which tests the candidate’s ability to read and understand in English; and
the writing section in which the candidate has to pen an essay on a given topic.
