Reading Comprehension is the last part of the Verbal test of GRE and accounts for
around 50% marks of the total section. As the name suggests, the part definitely
begins with carefully reading and comprehending the passage provided to answer all
the questions associated with paragraph correctly. These answers may not be directly
mentioned in the exact words in the passage. So do not waste time looking for words
from the question that appear in the paragraph.
At the GRE Reading Comprehension level you are expected to be able to draft answers
in your own words by understanding and absorbing the information and thoughts provided
in the passage. This part may contain around 10 passages and around 4-5 questions
per passage. Depending on the length of the paragraph, you will have to time each
question. In general, each question should be allocated around 1 minute.
When you start Reading Comprehension, firstly try to understand the meaning of the
narrative and the actual thought behind the episode or case. Try and make note of
all the important details mentioned in the passage. The passages cover matter from
many different subjects and not just basic literature. There may be a question asking
you for your view on the passage or asking you meanings of certain words in the
passage with a multiple choice.
Thus, the main task in Reading Comprehension is to understand the paragraph thoroughly
and not ignore any minute details too. A proper understanding of the writer’s thoughts
will make it easy for you to give your opinion and also draft correct answers. There
may be 1 or 2 paragraphs that are longer than others. Hence you will have to work
your time to finish the shorter passages quickly so that you can dedicate enough
time to the longer passages. Again, the key to succeeding is by attempting as many
sample tests as possible.
