ISSUE BASED TASK.

In the Analytical writing section of the GMAT CAT, the student has to write two essays. The First one, an issue based topic, where the candidates’ opinion on a controversial issue has to be penned down. The second one is about analyzing the reason in an argument and to find out the logical mistakes in it.

The issue based task in the GMAT essay is more like a debate, where the student has to put forward his/her views with greater emphasis, which should be backed by strong examples and logical reasoning. There should be a particular structure for an essay, which is mostly universal.

The Issue based essay should start with an introduction which will showcase the writer’s understanding of the issue in his/her own words. A clear explanation of why the topic is controversial and requires immediate attention has to be conveyed. The manner of writing should be one, where a high level of interest can be generated.

The next part is the body of the essay, and it should consist atleast two paragraphs, where the writer has to support his point of view with suitable examples and reasoning. This is the most important part of the essay, where the write has to establish his/her motion viably.

The third section is qualification of the issue. Since one cannot entirely support or reject a topic, he/she has to sound diplomatic through the statements. This section should favorably start with the words, “but”, “however” or “although”. The ending part of the essay is the conclusion and the student has to reinforce his/her motion at atlast. The essay has to sound logical, and diplomatic at the same time.

While writing the issue based essay, the candidate should be careful not to sound dogmatic in the statements that they make. One should not use long words and sentences, as this could lead the meaning else where. Also, suitable examples should be put forward, which support the writing at the same time. The issue based topics are like a coin, they have two sides to it and no side is right or wrong. The opinion of the candidate should only be 70%-80% inclined towards one side.
