ARGUMENT BASED TASK
The analytical writing section of the GMAT CAT consists of two essay questions,
one of which requires the candidate to put on his/her thinking cap and analyzes
the logical implementation of the situation. It’s the argument based task of the
GMAT essay. The candidate has to Screen the reasoning in an argument and rectify
the logical mistakes in it.
While writing the Argument based essay, one should definitely divide the entire
answer into four to five paragraphs. Starting with the introduction and obviously
ending with a sensible conclusion. A suitable introduction for the argument based
essay should consist of what the argument claims in actual. This should be written
in the candidates own words.
The body of the essay is the most important part of the answer. It should consist
two to three paragraphs explaining the faults or inadequacies in the argument. In
case of a false cause, the candidate should present suitable remedies and correctional
measures to be implemented. Omission of facts and figures from the methodology should
be mentioned in case of an inadequate survey and correct information should be conveyed
in case of misleading surveys.
The conclusion is the place where the candidate has to convey what else is needed
to know before he/she claims the argument valid or invalid. A formal conclusion
is a must; however, it is also important to use words like “first”,”therefore”,
and”because” in the essay. This helps the computer to identify the within and between
the paragraphs.
A few guidelines have to be kept in mind while writing the argument based essay.
The candidate should not by any chance give his/her personal opinion on the subject.
For example, if the argument states that many people are not buying cars because
the fuel prices have gone up, the candidate is not supposed to write what measures
should be taken to decrease the fuel prices or what makes a more fuel efficient
car. They have to simply write whether the provided evidence supports that conclusion
or not. The candidate has to by any chance identify the flaws in the argument. Marks
will be deducted if he/she is not able to identify the major mistakes and make the
suitable corrections.
